The Journey Out of Dry

Have you ever found yourself in a spiritually dry period? This desert experience, where the “living water” promises of God appear like a mirage, is something all Christians face. My wife, who is super big into her devotions, recently confessed to being in a dry spell. Anyone who goes through this sort of parched season desperately wants to experience more of God’s touch, and wonders why that is not occurring.

While studying Ephesians 4 in our Community Group, Robin sits silent. But her mind has kicked into overdrive. Meditating on the theme: Gifts given by God so that the body would be built up, she says. “There it is! I’m disconnected from mission. I don’t have enough outward flow for his gift of infilling.” When you think about it—her biblically inspired idea makes a whole lot of sense.

Consider, for example, the description Luke used for the Christians in the earliest embryonic phase of the church, where new Christians scattered about with God’s message, being “filled with the Holy Spirit.” When you step out for the kingdom’s cause, there is a corresponding result: God pours! His response reflects affirmation to his purposed will, and the practical empowerment necessary for the noble task. Dynamically, when we move, the Spirit moves. Can you imagine the early church talking about being dry? Didn’t happen. They would look at us puzzled: “Huh? What do you mean—dry?”

Want to experience an infusion of vitality? Desperate to break a dry spell? Join him in his mission call. Get outside your Christianized box to breathe some fresh intoxicating mission air. Step up your engagement with a specific not-yet-believing friend or neighbor, or someone in need within your community, and walk with them all the way into the faith. As you seek God’s heart for this person and a divine intervention, you will experience his anointing. After all, you need nothing short of a miracle! Although, God can turn a heart on a dime, he chooses to work through human vessels to prepare the way.

I cannot guarantee the result of your mission investment. But I can promise you one thing; you won’t be in the dry zone anymore. That course runs beside a river!
