Why Christians Struggle to Show Love — A Lesson from Real-Life Ministry
Introduction
Have you ever wondered why Christians struggle to show love, even when the Bible commands it? As believers, we’re called to reflect God’s love to the world, yet many of us find it surprisingly difficult. In a recent discipleship training session, I experienced this firsthand—and it revealed a powerful truth about love, action, and the surprising role of non-believers in modeling it.
The Challenge of Showing Love
In one of our new believer’s Basic Training classes, the assignment was simple: show love to someone inside and outside the church that week and report back. I was excited, expecting to hear about how God had moved through these small but meaningful acts. But when the group shared their reports, I was shocked—none of the twenty-three participants had completed the assignment. Not one.
As the instructor who had taught the love lesson, I felt disheartened. Why is it so hard for Christians to act on this most basic calling? Even though love is central to our faith, it’s often pushed aside by busy schedules, personal comfort, and the fear of stepping out.
A Surprising Example of Love
Just when I thought the day was lost, one of the wives spoke up. Her husband, James, had actually completed the assignment! We all clapped, relieved that someone had taken action. But here’s the twist—James isn’t a Christian.
James had not only helped fix a woman’s car for free, but he also repaired the car of her ex-husband. That’s radical love. While the believers in the room had hesitated, it was a non-Christian who demonstrated the kind of sacrificial love that Jesus calls us to show.
Why Christians Struggle to Show Love
This experience exposed a hard truth: even as Christians, we struggle to live out the love we profess. We get caught up in our routines and comfort zones, and sometimes we miss opportunities to reflect Christ’s love in real, tangible ways.
James’ act of kindness challenges us to rethink what it means to love others. It’s not about perfection or having all the answers—it’s about stepping out, seeing a need, and meeting it with compassion and grace.
How to Overcome This Struggle
So how can we grow in showing love consistently? Here are a few key steps:
- Pray for opportunities – Ask God to open your eyes to the needs around you.
- Start small – A simple act of kindness can have a ripple effect.
- Step outside your comfort zone – Love often requires sacrifice and courage.
- Reflect on Jesus’ love – Remember how Jesus loved others—even those who rejected Him.
Final Thoughts
James’ example reminds us that love is not just a feeling—it’s an action. If a non-believer can demonstrate radical love, how much more should we, as followers of Christ, reflect His heart to the world? Let’s rise to the challenge and become known by the love we show.
