Why This Podcast Matters Now

Why The Gospel Edge? Why that name? What’s the point of launching another podcast into the already noisy space?

Let me tell you.

This first episode of The Gospel Edge Podcast lays the foundation for where we’re going—and why I believe it’s needed for such a time as this.

Not Just Another Ministry Podcast

We could have called this “The Soul Whisperer Podcast.” That would have been the safe play. It ties directly to my ministry brand and the book that launched it.

But we’re stepping out into broader waters.

I wanted a name that could capture the kind of missional edge the gospel is meant to have—not just in our lives, but in our world. A name that reflects the urgency and direction of what we’re really after: real transformation, real engagement, and real stories of gospel movement.

What EDGE Really Means

The word edge carries multiple meanings—and I love them all.

1. The edge of culture – the places where faith meets the secular, where belief is tested, and where the Church must learn to engage with wisdom and courage.
2. The edge of influence – where we stop being tellers and start being transformational witnesses.
3. The edge of leadership – where missional leaders wrestle with how to mobilize the church for the Great Commission.

In many ways, The Gospel Edge is a call back to Jesus’ way of engaging others. A way that listens first, sees the person, and starts the conversation where they are—not where we wish they were.

From Tellers to Influencers

For too long, much of the Church has operated from a telling paradigm—”Just go tell them about Jesus.” But in today’s post-Christian culture, that approach simply doesn’t cut it. We must shift toward an influence paradigm—where we learn how to actually reach people from their starting point.

In the podcast, I shared a critique of a research piece on evangelism. It had all the stats—but not a single real story of faith engagement. No testimony of how someone was reached. That’s a problem.

Our goal on The Gospel Edge is to dive into those real-life stories. To explore how people are being reached today, what their journey looks like, and how faith formation truly happens.

Equipping the Church for Real Engagement

When I speak to churches or train leaders, I often ask: “Do your people know how to reach someone who doesn’t think like them?”

Blank stares.

We’ve got some discipleship structures in place, sure. But in terms of reaching people from distinct starting points, we’ve barely scratched the surface. The relational skills, the spiritual sensitivity, the cultural awareness—it’s not instinctive. It has to be taught and trained.

That’s why this podcast matters. We’re going to walk into those spaces and train voices—not just repeat formulas.

What’s Coming: Leadership, Subcultures, and Gospel Penetration

The Gospel Edge won’t just focus on the person-to-person side of ministry. We’ll also explore the leadership front—the deeper structures and decisions that shape gospel effectiveness across the Church.

From bottlenecks to breakthroughs, we’ll talk about what leaders need to see, understand, and shift to truly release the body for mission. And yes, we’ll be drawing from my leadership books like Soul Whisperer, ReMission, and the upcoming Game of Pulpits.

We’ll also step into the edges of society—different subcultures, neighborhoods, and underserved communities—and ask hard questions:

• Do we understand the people we’re trying to reach?
• Are we merely serving needs or fostering faith formation?
• What kind of training are we giving our people to navigate complex conversations?

Let’s Go There—Together

So here it is. Episode 1. The starting point of The Gospel Edge.

It’s not about just making noise. It’s about creating a space for real gospel dialogue, missional equipping, and leadership sharpening—so that the Church can reclaim its edge.
