Behind the scenes of Game of Pulpits book development

Is there a backstory to writing Game of Pulpits? Absolutely. And it’s more relevant than you might think. In this post, I take you behind the scenes of how Game of Pulpits came to life—through a chance Zoom conversation, a market saturated with church leadership books, and a spark of inspiration drawn from an unlikely source: Game of Thrones. The result? A one-of-a-kind perspective on the 7 voices shaping the future of the church. If you’re a mission-minded pastor or leader, this is your origin story, too.

The Birth of Game of Pulpits

It all started with a Zoom conversation. A leader colleague asked if I’d co-write a book on church revitalization. After reading his already-written book, I declined co-authorship but offered to contribute a chapter. What struck me more, though, was how saturated the market is with these kinds of books.

As I pondered this, a burst of creative energy hit me. I had just begun watching Game of Thrones, and the idea clicked: Game of Pulpits. The concept of competing voices striving to define the kingdom was both spiritually symbolic and culturally relevant. The title and subtitle—The 7 Voices Vying for the Kingdom: Who Will Win and Why?—came to me almost instantly. It was bold. It was honest. And it was exactly the kind of book I hadn’t yet seen.

Why the Game of Pulpits Concept Matters

As someone who consults across a wide denominational spectrum—from Pentecostals to Baptists, Mennonites to Evangelical Free Churches—I’ve seen firsthand the diversity of leadership philosophies in action. These 7 voices aren’t abstract. They are real, present, and powerful influences in how we “do church” and fulfill the Great Commission.

Game of Pulpits evaluates these voices not only by their theology but also by their effectiveness, their potential, and their future trajectory. It’s a book that challenges readers to think deeply, to self-assess, and to consider what kind of leader the Church needs today—and tomorrow.

A Book that Mirrors Leadership and Sparks Vision

This isn’t a book for agreement. It’s a book for reflection and action. I’m in three of the voices myself. The point is not to say one voice is superior, but to explore how each can be refined, integrated, and focused on gospel expansion.

Framed as a predictive piece, Game of Pulpits stretches from the present into 2050. That’s intentional. Leaders need to see beyond today. When we gain a vision of the future, we lead differently in the present.

The church needs forward-thinking, kingdom-focused leadership now more than ever. The canvas is wide open. And yes—the Game is on.
